The Temple Town Band

"America’s First Town Band"

Our next event is Wilton Memorial Day - Parade 9:00 AM on Monday, May 26, 2008Temple Town Band Insignia

Known as, "America's First Town Band", The Temple Band was founded in 1799. Throughout its 207 year history, the band has been providing music in its hometown, the region and the nation.

The Temple Town History notes that the band played for a town memorial service upon the death of George Washington in January of 1800. Other histories mention the band's participation in town centennial celebrations, dances at the town hall, and traditional concerts on the town common. In recent history, The Temple Band represented New England in the National Independence Day parade in Washington, DC in 1983 and 1993. In 1999 it was part of a special Old Home Days during New Hampshire's participation in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, again in Washington, DC.

In regular annual appearances, the Temple Band can be found playing from the gazebo at York Beach, Maine to the Common in Walpole, NH. The Band makes three annual appearances in its hometown; the first Sunday in June with a parade and concert for Temple's Memorial Day observances (accompanied by strawberry shortcake), the Fourth of July for an ice cream social and concert, and in late September with a concert for Temple's annual Harvest Festival. Boasting one of the largest music libraries on the east coast, our music repertoire consists of traditional marches, show tunes, Dixieland, jazz, novelty, original, classic and contemporary concert pieces.

The recent edition of the Temple Band came about in 1975 as Lucile Longo organized a group of 16 local musicians to play for bicentennial celebrations. The group has grown to over 50 amateur musicians, ranging in age from 11 to 87 from towns throughout Southern NH and North Central Massachusetts. It is an all-volunteer, family oriented, community band. There are no fees or auditions for membership. We welcome musicians of all ages with one to two years of experience on their instrument and the ability to commit to 50% of rehearsal and performance schedules.

We meet for weekly rehearsals on Monday evenings at 7:00 PM, from mid-October to mid-May in the Temple Town Hall. Following our annual Holiday Concert in early December, our regular summer season runs from late May through September consisting of approximately 15 concerts interspersed with an occasional parade.
